Qatar Open: Navarro sweeps past Mertens and into last 16
Emma Navarro beat Elise Mertens 6-1, 6-3 and will face the winner of the match between Lin Zhu and Elena Rybakina, the No 3 seed, in the next round

American Emma Navarro, the No 16 seed, beat Belgian Elise Mertens 6-1, 6-3 to reach the last 16 of the Qatar Open at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha.
Navarro, ranked No 23, will face the winner of the match between Chinese Lin Zhu and Kazakh Elena Rybakina, the No 3 seed, next.
Ahead of her victory, the 22-year-old American defeated Italian Jasmine Paolini (6-3, 7-5).
Mertens, ranked No 25, beat American Peyton Stearns (6-2, 6-3) in the previous round of the Qatar tournament.
