Three-time champion Tsitsipas battles past Thompson in Monte-Carlo opener

Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 6 seed and the winner of the title in three of the past four years, defeated Australian Jordan Thompson 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the last 16 of the Monte-Carlo Masters at the Monte-Carlo Country Club on Tuesday evening.
“I really didn’t know what to expect, you don’t know what your opponent is capable of,” Tsitsipas said after the victory, which is his 19th in his last 20 matches at this event.
“He showed a good first set, he seemed to be playing quite reserved and wasn’t giving me much to work with. I was just trying to find something to reignite that consistency within my game.
“I tried to work around my serve, I felt like these were the moments that were tricky at the start of the match. Once that felt more consistent, I tried to focus on my return. Trying to return from far back didn’t seem to work much… I have had success returning far back on clay courts, but today it didn’t do the job, so I had to rely on closer returns, and it seemed to work well.”
Tsitsipas, ranked No 8, will face the winner of the match between Portuguese Nuno Borges and Spaniard Pedro Martinez Portero next.
Thompson, ranked No 38, won against Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (6-4, 6-3) in the previous round of the Monte-Carlo tournament.
