When was Stefanos Tsitsipas born?

Stefanos Tsitsipas was born on August 12, 1998 (same day as Pete Sampras, also with Greek origins), in Athens. He supports AEK basketball and football teams. He now lives in Monte Carlo, just a 45-minute drive from Patrick Mouratoglou’s academy, located in Sophia Antipolis, in the South of France, where he trains.

How tall is he?

Stefanos Tsitsipas is 6’4″ (193cm) tall, according to his profile on ATP official website. He weighs 196 lbs (89kgs).

What is his nationality?

Tsitsipas is Greek. He is the greatest player in his country’s history. In 2017, at the age of 19, he became the first player from his country to break into the top 100, and the first in the top 10 in 2019.

At what age did he start playing tennis?

Tsitsipas started playing tennis at three years old.

“My first memory was three years ago and I was hitting balls with my father between tennis lessons. I remember me as a baby watching matches on television. I can’t tell you who was playing, but I remember watching.”

Tsitsipas is coached by his father, Apostolos Tsitsipas. The Greek player has been training at Patrick Mouratoglou’s academy in Sophia Antipolis, France, since 2015.

“I was lucky enough to be spotted by Patrick Mouratoglou at the age of fourteen. I think most of my success comes from training here. It has helped me a lot to grow as a tennis player and to see tennis from a different perspective”, said the Greek in a March 2020 interview with the Philippine magazine Tiebreaker Times.

Tsitsipas’ parents are Apostolos Tsitsipas, born on December 24, 1967, and Julia Apostoli, born on August 13, 1964. His father was a tennis teacher in a club in Athens’ chic suburbs before he became his son’s full-time coach. His mother, born in Russia as Julia Salnikova, was a professional tennis player. She reached the 194th place in the world in 1990 and retired in 1995. She married Apostolos Tsitsipas in 1991 and took the Greek citizenship. She is the daughter of Soviet professional footballer Sergei Salnikov, an Olympic champion in 1956.

How many siblings does he have?

Stefanos Tsitsipas has two brothers, Pétros, born on July 27 2000, also a tennis player (world number 1184), and Pávlos, born on July 23 2005. He also has a sister, Elisávet, born on March 7 2008. Stefanos is the eldest of the family.

When did Tsitsipas start his pro career?

Tsitsipas began his professional career in 2016, after holding the world number one ranking in juniors. The Greek player won his first match on the main tour against Karen Khachanov at the Shanghai Masters 1000, in 2017. Tsitsipas won his first ATP title in Stockholm in 2018.
