Kazakh Elena Rybakina, the No 3 seed, won against Frenchwoman Alize Cornet 6-2, 7-6 (2) to advance to the third round of Wimbledon at the All England Club in London on Thursday evening.

The defending champ engaged in a heated second set with Cornet, and eventually squeaked past the Frenchwoman in the tiebreak to close out her ninth consecutive Wimbledon victory in one hour and 48 minutes.

Rybakina, ranked No 3, will face wildcard Katie Boulter next.

Rybakina cracked 36 winners against 40 unforced errors, while Cornet struck just seven winners against 12 unforced.

The No 3 seed fired four aces, won 39 of 50 first-serve points and saved all six break points she faced to improve to 12-1 lifetime at SW19.

Speaking to the media following her win, Rybakina gave her thoughts on the match:

“I started really well. Happy that in the end managed to win in two sets because the second one was quite tricky,” said the 24-year-old.

“Today was much better coming out. Yeah, first set I played really well. I had much more energy than in the second one. I think that now, after the first one, it just got better.”

Ahead of her victory, the Kazakh defeated American Shelby Rogers (4-6, 6-1, 6-2).

Cornet, ranked No 74, beat Japanese lucky loser Nao Hibino (6-2, 6-2) in the previous round of The Championships.
